Stir Up the Perfect Manhattan

Behold: the Manhattan cocktail. Timeless, strong, perfectly sweet and dry… in our humble opinion, there isn’t a cocktail out there that can top it. Here at Domain West Hollywood, our reasons for loving the Manhattan are many – it’s delicious, beautiful, more than 100 years old, and like all the best classic cocktails, it’s a drink just about anyone can make if they have the right ingredients.

Popular legend says the Manhattan was invented at New York’s historic Manhattan Club around 1880. At its most basic level, it’s made with whiskey, vermouth and bitters; stirred, NOT shaken! Simple rye whiskey is the most obvious choice, but we prefer to make ours with bourbon. Even our favorite Old Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe liked her Manhattans with bourbon. Who could forget that classic line in the 1959 movie, Some Like it Hot? “We’ve got bourbon? We can make a Manhattan!”

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • ½ ounce sweet vermouth
  • Dash of orange bitters – two or three dashes are even better than one
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish


Add all the liquid ingredients to a large glass, fill with ice, stir well, then strain into a cocktail glass. Add your cherry and enjoy.
